About

Our steam locomotives, in particular the 10 Class, have played an integral part in the history and evolution of the Maitland area. Located in their historical birthplace, the preservation and operation are based in East Greta Junction.

We have created an opportunity for corporations, train enthusiasts and philanthropists, along with the general community to be involved in the preservation of these locomotives. We aim to create a sustainable business that preserves, promotes, and makes the locomotives available for future generations to enjoy them.

We are here to create an opportunity for access to and the hiring of operational locomotives for special occasions.

The company is managed by a Board of four volunteer Directors who are managing and guiding the company through its formation into a sustainable business model. The company manages two state heritage listed 10 Class Locomotives:

  • Number 10 built in 1911
  • Number 18 built 1915

Uniqueness of Number 10 and 18 Locomotives

  • The locomotives were designed, constructed and purchased from the most famous locomotive company in the world at that time, Beyer Peacock, Gorton foundry, Manchester, England.
  • Locomotives No.10 and No.18 are still surviving today and are the only locomotives operational. They are also the only steam locomotives protected by the State Heritage Office.
  • The locomotives were designed specially to work the South Maitland Railway (SMR) line and did so commercially for 71 years. As a fully intact Class of Locomotives this was a longevity unequalled in Australia.
  • Members of this Class of locomotive were the last steam locomotives in commercial use in Australia.
  • There are no other locomotives of this design in the world.
  • The locomotives are still located in their historical birthplace at East Greta Junction, Telarah.
