10 Class Locomotives Limited is proud to be home to 10 Class locomotives, where you can experience the unique steam locomotives and learn about their heritage. We feature the only two remaining operational steam locomotives of their Class in the world. Join us on our journey to preserve these incredible locomotives and make them available for future generations to enjoy.
History
10 Class Locomotives is a Class of 14 2-8-2T steam locomotives built for the East Greta Coal Mining Company (later to be known as South Maitland Railways). There were fourteen Class 10 (2-8-2) steam locomotives built and were operated by the South Maitland Railways (SMR), the largest and busiest private railway in Australia. These 14 identical locomotives were specifically designed, constructed, and purchased from the most famous locomotive construction company in the world at that time, Beyer Peacock, Gorton foundry, Manchester, England.
The locomotives were built between 1911 and 1926. The design of the locomotives is technologically significant and there are no other locomotives of this design in the world.
Our Stock
The 10 Class are unique, being the only steam locomotives protected by the State Heritage Office and have the distinction of being the only steam locomotives listed on the State Heritage Register. They are also listed as significant items by the National Trust of Australia.
No.10 was built in 1911 and commenced service in 1912. This is the oldest 10 Class Locomotive. No.18 was built and commenced service in 1915.

As a unique, state heritage listed asset that is being returned to full operational mode, you can be on the ground floor to bring this plan to life.
Once fully operational, this locomotive will be made available to the community and used to provide a source of revenue for the ongoing preservation and promotion of the steam locomotives.
